This modern abstract piece is a mixed media painting on paper that features acrylic, oil, and collage. Its name was inspired by the large, colorful jellybean like shapes that can be seen throughout the piece.

In terms of technique, this piece was a turning point for my creative process. It’s the first piece in which I created a source through Photoshop. Typically, my sourcing is more of an idea board. I pull together different images for inspiration and general direction as opposed to working off of one image. This piece differed in that I worked off of one source image that I created. Through this process, I learned that it was something that I really enjoyed and I continue to incorporate it into my process.

One of the things I love most about this work is its brightness. I wanted to create a non objective art piece that was very light and at the same time colorful. I feel as though this color palette and the movement evokes feelings of joy and fun.

Other things I really love about this piece and want the viewer to see are:

  • The collage: Many of the collage pieces I used show through. Some of these pieces are really unique in that I used some of my own experimental paintings from old sketchbooks to add some originality and color.
  • Scratches: There are several places in the painting where I used a palette knife and other tools to make scratches in the paint. It creates a new level of texture.
  • Texture: One of the things I hear the most praise about in this painting when I show it is the level of texture. Acrylic molding paste was used early on and it created some cool bumps and ridges in the piece.
  • Line variety: I love the line variety in this piece, especially the small dots versus the big circles and the thin lines versus the thick lines at the very top of the piece.

The feelings that I hope my viewer feels when seeing this piece are:

  • Joy
  • Optimism
  • Fun
  • Happiness

I believe this abstract work would be perfect in an office (home or otherwise), living room, or perhaps even a dining room. I can imagine that this piece attracts a collector who loves modern non objective abstracts; enjoys filling their space with bright and colorful work; and invests in surrounding themselves with things that bring them joy.
